Charleston: Presentation

Description:
Charleston's prestige as a "Food City" creates a very interesting dynamic for a culinary institute. The concept of a vertical culinary institute creates a unique experience of the senses. Being placed between a residential and commercial road this building has the opportunity to bring forth the two pieces of urban life and meld them together in a school platform. The school itself is a device to teach and practice what is being learned. The integration of these spaces is a fundamental ideal of hands on learning. The entrance of this building is created to allude to the vertical nature of the spaces and how the movement of the person is allowed. The main idea of this intervention is the three different components that are coming together into one. The administration, teaching and public are all designed so that the circulation of the floors is the guiding factor in its integration.

Judges Comments:
Something that I thought was interesting to my design would be the movement of circulation on or above that alleyway. Instead of taking it for granted, designing it in such a way that it’s more than just a passage of space. -Having a clearer understand of the spaces and movement.
-Unique entrance that drew client in
-Not the structure of the walls but the design structure that is architectural
Allow for roof dynamic; not another floor plane.
-Better and clearer floor plans.
-Designed so that everything is solved; go back and design it/missed a step

When to go from here:
Creating a unique structure that is design rather than implied by the wall systems so that it creates and defines its own network of space, structure and pause. Design more pieces of the circulation and spaces that allow for a pause so that the occupant can view the building: structures, windows to spaces, view the students at work. Making the alleyway a better and more reasonable circulation route so that the occupants and pedestrians are drawn into the alleyway and thus into the building. Creating a more dynamic circulation that allows for unique movement and not stereotypical floor planes. Create an interesting roof scape and the landscape/context that can be altered.
